The making of each #WastetoWaves handplane helps 10 HDPE milk bottles find a new purpose. Every bottle used in foam is intercepted, cleaned, melted, moulded and hand finished.
This entire process happens in the workshop at the back of foam's cafe in Bundoran, Ireland.
INTERCEPT
Using an in-house manufacturing process we start with the waste milk bottles from the cafe being cleaned.
MOULD
The milk bottles are then melted, colour added, and compressed in a specially designed aluminium mould.
ASSEMBLE
After mouldIng, each plane is hand finished before the cork deck pad and brass screw inserts are added.
FINISH
To finish we hand make each individual strap and mount it to the 4 brass threaded inserts inlaid in the deck.
Features
01 — HDPE Hull
The main body of the plane is made from 320g of recycled milk bottles
02 — Cork Deck
Inlaid into the deck is a large sheet of 3mm Portuguese cork, great for grip and cushioning
03 — Strap
Bombproof 50mm wide Polyester webbing, with 2 layers of velcro (like a leash). Bolted into brass inserts in the deck
04 — Shape
300mm long x 200mm wide, deep single concave under the palm for lift, transitioning to flat at the tail
